Vinegar :: essays research papers
Who’s been cheating on the vinegar? Aim: To investigate if the vinegars have been diluted by working out their concentrations. Scientific Background: Vinegar is an acid and there fore can be neutralised by an alkali. Acid + Alkali à salt + water Hydrochloric acid + Sodium Hydroxide à Sodium chloride + water Vinegar is a weak acid and therefore it only partially ionises in solution. CH3COOH ßà CH3COO- + H+ An alkali such as Sodium Hydroxide has a formula NaOH. If the alkali is strong then it ionises fully in solution. NaOH ßà Na+ + OH- When the acid H+ reacts with the alkali OH- the solution neutralises. Prediction: If the acid has been diluted there will be less H+ ions present in the volume used. Therefore to cancel the alkali more acid will be required. This is on the assumption that the alkali volume and concentration stay constant. Method:  ·Ã‚     Measure 10cm3 of 0.1m alkali into a measuring cylinder then place the solution into a 75cm3 conical flask.  ·Ã‚     Then add 2-3 drops of indicator to the alkali (it will go purple in colour)  ·Ã‚     Measure out 50 cm3 of the vinegar into a measuring cylinder and then place into a glass beaker.  ·Ã‚     Then using a dropper add the vinegar drop wise to the alkali until 1-drop changes the solution to colourless.  ·Ã‚     Replace the vinegar back into the measuring cylinder and record the volume of vinegar used.  ·Ã‚     Repeat this process twice more, recording results.  ·Ã‚     Then repeat the whole procedure for each different concentration of vinegar. Preliminary Work: Aim:- To find out which concentration of alkali will give accurate, measurable values. Concentration(M) Volume of acid(cm3) 0.1m 21.45cm3 0.5m 78.9cm3 0.75m 100+cm3 1.0m 100+cm3 2.0m 100+cm3 We decided from the results that the best measurable concentration of alkali would be the 0.1m concentrations. The results obtained from shop1 show that its is very similar in concentration to the manufacturers’. Two of the results show that it is less concentrated than the manufacturers’, but one shows that it is more concentrated, this is impossible so its is most likely due to human error and not taking the readings properly. Concentrations: Manufacturers’= 1 ¸10.11 = 0.0989119683 Shop1 = 1 ¸10.11 = 0.0989119683 Shop2 = 1 ¸18.23 = 0.054854635 Shop3 = 1 ¸38.08 = 0.026260504 These results show an obvious difference in the concentration with the manufacturers’ being the most concentrated and shop 3’s being the least concentrated. Evaluation: The results from this experiment can be considered reasonably accurate we took the results quite accurately.

Greek and Etruscan Architecture
Greek & Etruscan Architecture Greek and Etruscan architecture began to take shape during the Archaic and Early Classical periods. There were similarities between the early Greek and Etruscan architectural styles, but there were far more differences. One of the most obvious similarities between the Greek and Etruscan styles was the use of a gabled roof. A gabled roof resembles a triangle in that it has a peak in the middle, and then has two straight slopes from the peak to each side wall. These roofs were often supported by the use of pillars or columns and is evident in both Greek and Etruscan architecture. Like Greek temples, Etruscan temples also featured an â€Å"inner chamber†known as a cella. A cella is typically an enclosed prayer room located in the center of a temple. Many of the structures made during this time period were comprised of wood or a mud-brick mixture, which is why there are few structures that remain today. Beginning with the Classical period, Greek architects began to set themselves apart from Etruscan builders by using more durable materials like limestone and marble to construct their temples and buildings. Greek temples were mostly built in the Doric or Ionic orders, while the Etruscans used the more primitive Tuscan order. The Doric and Ionic orders are very ornate, detailed, and aesthetically pleasing. They feature a column with a fluted design, which gives the pillar a thinner, taller, more elegant look. The Tuscan order on the other hand, is a very plain design and features columns with a simple base (foundation), capital (crown of the column) and frieze (horizontal section resting on top of the capital, but below the entablature). Etruscan pillars of the Tuscan order were often made of wood and did not have flutes. Some of the other major differences between Etruscan and Greek architecture can easily be seen when comparing the Greek Parthenon to an Etruscan temple. The Parthenon features a colonnade (row of columns) and steps around the entire perimeter of the complex, while the typical Etruscan temple would have a colonnade and steps in the front of the building only. The Parthenon also featured a one-room cella with two porches. One porch would lead into the cella and the other porch would lead out of the cella. Etruscan temples featured a three room cella with only one porch in the front. The final distinction between the Parthenon and a typical Etruscan temple would be in the artistic level of detail each one was designed with. The Etruscan temple was built in the very plain and basic Tuscan order, with no ornamentation built into the actual structure itself, but multiple statues of gods placed on the roof of the temple. The Greek Parthenon however, was built in both the Doric and Ionic orders, with hundreds of lavishly decorated statues, figurines and figural reliefs built into the pediments (triangular section above the entablature), metopes (a decorative band that fills the space between the frieze and the entablature), and frieze.

My Weekend Essay While on vacation in Acapulco Mexico, I, along with my family and friends took a tourby boat to a small resort island. As we approached, I was awestruck by its beauty. I knew thiswas going to be fun, but had no idea that this place would be forever etched in my mind. Wewere greeted at the dock by two natives dressed in brightly colored tropical shirts, white pantsand shoes. They were also wearing smiles just as bright. They escorted us to an open-air typerestaurant with a thatched roof that was actually attached to the pier at which we docked. Therestaurant had a casual atmosphere that made us very comfortable. The food was served buffetstyle, with an elegant array of Mexican and American cuisine. The entertainment provided in therestaurant during and after the buffet was delightful. A ten minute introduction to the Mexicanculture was followed by an intriguing native dance, performed by a man dressed in an authenticlooking costume consisting of only a rawhide G-string with a short ap ron front. His sandals hadleather cords winding halfway up his legs. This dance depicted a story of a hunter and his prey. Itwas narrated by a woman who was also in costume. Brightly dressed Mexican men were beatingdrums and banging sticks providing the sound effects for the story. This was truly a greatbeginning to a wonderful afternoon. Behind the restaurant was a low mountainous area,accessible by walking trails only. We hiked one of these trails, observing the brightly coloredtropical plants and trees that flourished greatly on this well maintained terrain. A beautifulwaterfall added to the splendor, and when we reached the top, a lookout provided a panoramicview of the entire bay. What a breathtaking sight! There was a bar here, and after a cool drinkwe decided to head down. We took a different trail down that brought us to the base of themountain. In front of us, about 150 feet was the beach. It was 90 degrees and the Mexican sunmade the sand hot under our feet. However, a gen tle breeze kept us comfortable otherwise. On the beach we rented a cabana, which is little more than a thatched umbrella, table and beachchairs. There, we sat and enjoyed one of those big tropical drinks that has fruit on the edge of theglass and a small umbrella of its own. Staring out into the bay from my chair, was possibly themost serene feeling I have had in my life. There were many people around and they were makingplenty of noise, but my mind was absorbed with the natural beauty of this place. It was like nonethat I had ever seen before. Looking across the bay toward the mainland, with all its hustle andbustle, I felt as if I had found paradise. I had been to the ocean twice before, but only in the U.S.,and never to a bay. Bay waters are much calmer, and therefore much clearer-so clear, in fact,that at a depth of six feet I was able to see a penny. The color of the water is also amazinglydifferent from ocean water. The intensity of the blue color is almost fluorescent. After we rested,we decided it was time to get wet, so we donned our snorkeling gear and entered the warmwater. I had never snorkeled before, but it wasnt long before I felt comfortable. Most of ourexperience was in very shallow water and I dont think it was ever necessary to go down morethan ten feet. The fish didnt seem to be bothered by our presence, and although I dont knowwhat kind they were, I touched two of them, and their reaction was only to flip their tail. Aboutforty feet out from the beach it was still only about seven or eight feet deep, and thats where thecoral appeared. This is something that no television or video could do justice to. The vivid colorsof the coral alone were enough to make this whole trip worthwhile. There were many differenttypes of fish, most of them with vibrant colors, varying in size from the size of a silver dollar, tothe size of a foot or more in length.
